A new coalition of business owners is calling for more action against crime in Moncton, while the municipality is asking the provincial government to increase the powers of its bylaw enforcement officers.
A new coalition called “Assez, c’est assez” is calling for improved public safety in downtown Moncton, New Brunswick.
The coalition launched its campaign on Tuesday and it brings together entrepreneurs and property owners, according to Mike Randall, CEO of the Portfolio firm, which is involved in the management of the organization.
The coalition is circulating a petition for a crackdown on crime, a greater police presence and accountability from all three levels of government. More than 1,000 people have already signed the petition, according to the coalition.
The city of Moncton is precisely asking the provincial government to expand the powers of its municipal bylaw enforcement officers, says city councilor Charles Léger.
The municipality proposes to give its agents more rigorous training than that of peace officers,” explains Mr. Léger.
The Minister of Public Safety confirms that he is looking into Moncton’s request.
